This week’s devotional:

God’s Building Project

by Sue Hersey

Scripture:

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
— Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV)

Reflection:

Here in New England, we see so much construction going on during the warm-weather months—road construction, housing developments, and all sorts of building projects at different levels of completion. Of course, each project needs to have a master builder with a plan behind it in order to succeed. The master builder is the person who knows the purpose behind each stage of construction, down to the last detail, and understands the timing of when things need to be completed.

In Philippians 1:6, we read that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” God has begun a good work inside each of us. We can believe God has a glorious project in mind, and he’s using us—along with other believers—to put it together. We may not understand just what he is trying to do or why. It is certainly difficult being a work in progress because of the disruption and change that comes with it. But, according to his word in Philippians 2:13, “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” We know that God’s purposes are good and that he will complete the project at just the right time.

Together, the people of his church are a project under construction with God as the master builder. He’s raising up this building on the foundation laid by the prophets and apostles that came before us, and Christ serves as the all-important cornerstone of the building. What a thing to be a part of!

In 1 Thessalonians 2:13 we are assured that—just like when the universe was created—God, through his mighty word, “is indeed at work in you who believe.” Let’s take a moment right now to thank the Lord for choosing us to be his people and for including us in his plans to make us into “a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”

Prayer:

Lord Almighty, what a privilege to be a part of your church and part of your plan! Please use us, mold us, change us, build us together—however it works—to be used for your good purpose. Holy Spirit, dwell within us and help us to submit to your master plan. Transform us through your word and in your mighty power. Join your church together. Keep us strong and make us holy by building us upon the work of Jesus Christ, in whose holy name we pray. Amen
